As the leader of a global Diversity and Inclusion volunteer team, my time outside of school for the last several years has been dedicated to actively improving participation in and retention of underserved individuals in the LGBTQ community. My team has connected underserved STEM individuals to affinity groups, offers suicide first aid and crisis management resources, and trains individuals and organizations. Most recently, I am proud of our opening the first LGBTQIA+ STEM crisis text line, which has been available to individuals in need since college students first became displaced due to COVID-19.
Queer + STEM Mental Health Text Line
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or if you need support with navigating your LGBTQIA+ identity or orientation, our qualified crisis counselors all work in STEM and identify within the LGBTQIA+ community. We are here to support your whole self and we’re happy to help you during these troubling times. We offer judgement-free, confidential text messaging to individuals 18+.
Currently our text line is staffed entirely by volunteers who will be available at various times throughout the day to assist with crisis situations. While we’d love to offer full 24/7/365 support, during this time, we have a limited number of volunteers who are qualified for mental health crisis intervention or LGBTQIA+ general support. Therefore we may not have someone available to respond immediately to your texts, but we will always check in with you. Thank you in advance for your understanding. If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis and need to chat with a qualified LGBTQIA+ crisis counselor, please text us at: +1 (313) 662-8209.
If you are in need of alternate support, I recommend the following options:
